OC JUNIOR LIFEGUARD COVID-19 PROGRAM UPDATE 6/18/2020

As the State of California progresses through reopening and has set COVID-19 Industry Guidance for Day Camps, we have decided to move forward with a modified program for the summer of 2020 utilizing the new guidelines. The decision to move forward with the modified program and the following requirements are in compliance with the current guidelines and will continue with the long standing tradition of prioritizing the safety of both our students and instructors.

The following program updates have been made for the 2020 season effective 6/18/20:

ENROLLMENT:
  • The program will be limited to RETURNING STUDENTS ONLY in order to maintain a 12 to 1 student : instructor ratio, accommodate reductions in overall enrollment limits, and adhere to social distancing guidelines due to COVID 19. Enrollment priority will be given in the order reservations were received.
  • We are sorry, but New Students will not have an option to be enrolled regardless if they have passed a swim test or not.
  • Enrollment will open at 12:00PM on Thursday, June 18th and close at 11:59PM on Sunday, June 21st. Enrollment will be carried out as follows:
    • Customers who paid for enrollment prior to the COVID-19 shut down will be automatically enrolled in the week(s) they paid for.
    • Customers with reservations must log into their OCJG Customer Account and pay in full to secure their child's enrollment.
    • Customers who are not able to secure enrollment due to limited capacity will be placed on a waiting list and contacted by OCJG in the order of their reservation date as spaces become available.
  • The program sessions are Monday-Friday, 9am-3pm as follows:
    • Week 1 & 2- 6/15-6/26 Cancelled
    • Week 3- 7/6-7/10 Full
    • Week 4- 7/13-7/17 Full
    • Week 5- 7/20-7/24 Full
    • Week 6- 7/27-7/31 Full
    • Week 7- 8/3-8/7 Full
  • The program cost is $195 per child per week
  • NO REFUNDS will be provided once payment has been made.
  • Participants will be assigned to the same group and instructor(s) for the entire week of enrollment. Group switches WILL NOT be permitted in order to maintain proper ratios, social distancing and contact tracing.
UNIFORMS:
  • Uniforms will be for sale on the following dates:
    • June 27th, 9am-12pm
    • July 18th, 9am-12pm

  • Sales will be conducted outdoors with social distancing and face coverings required

SWIM TEST:

Due to COVID-19, OC Junior Guards is only accepting enrollments for returning students. New students will not be permitted to enroll in the JG Program at this time even if they have completed a swim test. Students who would still like to complete the swim test requirement for possible future enrollments may still do so pending availability with Dolphin Aquatics. ASSISTANTS AND ORCAS:

Due to limited enrollment, OCJG Assistants will be assigned to groups on a limited basis and may not be selected for an assignment in the 2020 program. Priority will be given to returning Assistants with the most flexible availability. Selections will be made and confirmed by email by June 26th. Please contact cpierce@oclg.org with any questions.

OCJGs plans to run the Orca Program. More detail on the Orca tryouts will be provided to students and parents during the first day of instruction.

Program Health and Safety Operations:

    DROP OFF- Strands Parking Lot at Selva Rd. at 9:00 a.m.
  • Park your vehicle in a parking space and have your student proceed directly down to the beach with their equipment (DO NOT CONGREGATE ON THE GRASS). Instructors and Assistants will be present to guide the students down the stairs to OCJG Base Camp.
  • Students shall wear face covering while they are walking up and down the stairs and maintain physical distancing per CA STATE HEALTH ORDER *Students will be guided to their group's tent by instructors. Students shall proceed straight to their tent and follow instructions for check in.
  • Group switches will not be permitted. Students must remain with the group they are assigned to due to COVID-19 safety measures to ensure physical distancing and contact tracing.
    PICK UP- Strands Parking Lot at Selva Rd. To help maintain physical distancing, pick-up times will be staggered. Student groups will be escorted by instructors and ready for pick up from the center grass island as follows:
  • 9 year olds- 2:45 p.m.
  • 10 year olds- 2:50 p.m.
  • 11 year olds- 2:55 p.m.
  • 12 and Up- 3:00 p.m.

FACE COVERINGS- OCJG students are required to have a cloth face covering as new required equipment for 2020. OCJG will be providing students with a free neck/face gator that can be worn as a face covering and sun protection of the ears and nose. Students will not be required to wear face coverings during physical activities or eating.They will only be required to wear them during drop off and pick up and at limited times where physical distancing is not possible.

HEALTH CHECK-Parents shall screen their child for any symptoms of illness prior to each day of participation. Students with any symptoms including temperature of 100.4 or higher, cough, shortness of breath, chills, muscle pain, headache, sore throat, or new loss of taste or smell shall be kept home and parents shall notify OCJG. Any student who has been in close contact with a suspected or confirmed COVID-19 case or who has tested positive for COVID-19 shall stay home and OCJG shall be notified.

  • Detailed information regarding daily procedures and health requirements will be provided to parents via email and the Junior Guards website prior to the start of the camp.
  • Parents will be asked to conduct a Daily Health Screen of participant children each day of camp. All lifeguard staff will also health screen each day. Participants exhibiting any of the following symptoms are to be kept home until symptoms are completely gone:
    • Temperature of 100.4 Fahrenheit or greater
    • Cough
    • Shortness of breath
    • Chills
    • Muscle pain
    • Headache
    • Sore throat
    • New loss of taste or smell
  • Staff will be trained on observing for signs of illness in participants. If a participant appears to become ill during the camp, the participant will be evaluated by staff to determine if the participant needs to be removed from activities and have parent or guardian notified. If a student is required to withdraw from the session, the program administrator will determine if or when the ill student may return to the program based on current CDC, State and County guidelines.
  • Participants will be required to bring a reusable/washable face cover when attending the program. Students may bring their own or purchase one at the OCJG uniform distribution. Face covers will need to be worn at certain times based on our efforts to comply with appropriate social distancing requirements.
  • Participants will need to bring a personal bottle of hand sanitizer, containing at least 60% ethyl alcohol, with them each day. Staff will conduct checks to ensure all participants have the required items at check in each morning.
  • Participants will be required to be dropped off individually and walk straight to JG Camp where instructors will be present to guide them to their meeting zone. Groups will be released in a staggered format at the end of the day to provide social distancing on the stairways and parking lot during pick up
  • Participants will be required to bring their own lunch and water each day.
  • To prevent co-mingling of participants and to maintain social distancing. Parents and family members will not be allowed into the Junior Guards camp area at any time.
  • The curriculum will follow current California Department of Public Health recommendations and guidelines. The curriculum will be modified from previous years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but will still provide for a great experience for participants. The following curriculum modifications have been made:
    • Mock Rescues- Conducted without physical contact
    • Tandem Paddleboarding- Eliminated
    • Relays- Conducted with spacing and tagless transitions
    • Medical skill training- Conducted without physical contact.
    • Training equipment will be sanitized before and after each use or discarded
    • Lunch- Students may not share any food, must remain in their own 6 foot space and wash hands before and after eating
Ongoing Assessment and Communication:

We understand how important junior guards is to our community and appreciate the need to provide a healthy and safe outdoor activity for our children. As a public safety agency, OC Lifeguards is required to adhere to the highest standards of safety for its employees, beach patrons, JG students and their family members. Our goal is to comply with Federal, State and County regulations and make certain that we can meet all necessary health and safety challenges while still providing a program that is enriching and of value to our customers.
